IELTS remains the most universally accepted test, required or accepted by virtually every university in the UK, Australia, Canada, and most of Europe. It's a strong default choice if you're not yet sure exactly where you're applying, but it requires the most preparation time — typically 4–6 weeks for a meaningful band improvement — and results take up to 13 days.
PTE Academic is fully computer-delivered and AI-scored, which means results in as little as 48 hours. It particularly suits students who are strong typists and comfortable with a fast-paced, single-sitting format. Many Australian and UK universities now accept PTE on equal footing with IELTS.
The Duolingo English Test is the fastest and cheapest option — taken entirely from home in about an hour, with results in 48 hours, at roughly a third of the cost of IELTS or PTE. Acceptance has grown enormously, with over 4,500 institutions worldwide now recognising it, but it's worth double-checking your specific target university, since a small number still require IELTS or PTE specifically.
Our general rule: if your timeline is under three weeks, Duolingo or PTE; if your university insists on IELTS, or you have 5+ weeks to prepare, IELTS remains the safest, most widely recognised choice.
